Expert Orthodontic Treatment in Nashua & Amherst, NH
At Orthodontic Associates of New England, we put our patients first. We strive to provide premier orthodontic care while maintaining a fun, welcoming office environment. Drs. Metcalf and Bednarz treat every patient on a case-by-case basis, designing personalized treatment plans that perfectly suit each patient's unique orthodontic needs and lifestyle. While braces used to be the only option for straighter teeth, advances in orthodontic technology allow us to offer more discrete treatment alternatives – and Invisalign is one of the best for both socially-conscious teenagers and busy adult professionals.
The Clear Alternative to Braces
The revolutionary Invisalign System does away with the metal brackets and wires used by traditional braces. Instead, Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth. The aligners fit directly onto your dental arch and they’re virtually invisible when worn. They can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, making them one of the most convenient orthodontic options available. With Invisalign, you can still enjoy your favorite foods during treatment, oral hygiene is as easy as ever, and - best of all - almost no one will know you're straightening your teeth.
How Invisalign Works
Invisalign makes use of advanced orthodontic technology to offer a reliable, precise, and convenient form of treatment. Before we start treatment, we'll first use digital imaging technology to create a fully-realized 3D computer model of your mouth. We’ll use Invisalign's predictive software to simulate the changes that treatment will make to your smile, allowing us to see exactly what your new smile will look like once you finish treatment and every step needed to get there.
We’ll use this model to create a detailed treatment plan broken up into two week increments. Based on these increments, we'll have the Invisalign company custom manufacture your own set of Invisalign aligners specifically designed to fit your mouth. You'll wear each pair aligner for two weeks before moving onto the next pair, and with each new set, your teeth will move closer to their final positions. Once you finish your series of aligners, your treatment is officially complete and your new smile is yours to keep!
Q. How often will I need to wear my aligners?
A. You'll need to wear the aligners 20-22 hours a day, including while you sleep. The only times you’ll remove them are to eat, drink, brush, and floss.
Q. Will I have to avoid certain foods during treatment?
A. Not at all! Because you remove your aligners to eat and drink, you can still enjoy all your favorite foods during treatment. Just be sure to brush your aligners and teeth before putting them back in.
Q. Will Invisalign have an effect on my speech?
A. You'll go through a brief adjustment period when you first start your treatment. Many patients report that they have a mild lisp while using their first aligner, but any noticeable changes in speech should dissipate within a week or two.
Q. Does Invisalign hurt?
A. Generally speaking, no. Invisalign doesn't "hurt." Many patients report a feeling of pressure or discomfort for several days when they switch to a new set of aligners, but this is generally mild and fades quickly. If you’re using Invisalign and you experience unmanageable discomfort, contact us so that we can make sure the aligners are fit to your teeth properly.
Q. Can I chew gum with Invisalign?
A. Not while you have the aligners in. Gum can get stuck in and damage aligners, so if you want to chew it, you'll have to take the aligners out to do so.
Q. Can I smoke with Invisalign?
A. No. Smoke can discolor and warp aligners. If you must smoke, you'll have to remove your aligners to do it, but we'd recommend quitting – and we can happily connect you with resources to help.
Q. How do I clean my aligners?
A. Cleaning is easy. All you have to do is brush your aligners with toothpaste – just as you would your teeth – every time you take them out and put them back in. For students and working professionals, this means having a toothbrush and toothpaste in the office or at school so that you can brush your teeth and your aligners after you finish lunch.
Q. How often will I need to have appointments during treatment?
A. We typically schedule check-ups every five or six weeks. However, that number may vary depending on your unique situation. College students find that Invisalign is a great alternative to braces because they can go to school with enough aligner sets to last until their next vacation, and they don’t have to worry about the monthly appointments that are mandatory for braces. This is also convenient for our working patients because it means that they don’t need to take as much time off work for dental appointments.
Q. Will I need a retainer when I'm done?
A. As with all forms of orthodontic treatment, you'll need to go through a retention phase to ensure your teeth don’t move out of alignment after your active treatment is over. But, just like the rest of the Invisalign System, you don’t have to worry about metal wires to keep your teeth in place – you can simply use your last pair of aligners as retainers!
Q. How long is my treatment going last?
A. This varies greatly from patient to patient depending on the severity of your orthodontic condition, but our patients generally complete treatment in six to 18 months.
